Blog Tour + Interview: Compulsion

Title: Compulsion (Heirs of Watson Island, the #1)
Author: Martina Boone
Publication Date: 28 October, 2014
Publisher: Simon Pulse

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.

All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lives with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead--a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.

Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family's twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

Hi, thanks so much for having me on the blog today! I’m thrilled to be here and grateful that you’re willing to share COMPULSION with your readers!
  • Are your books pure fiction or does your own life or someone close to you inspire some aspects?
The Heirs of Watson Island series is definitely fiction, but it’s very loosely based on some historical events and people in the Charleston, SC area. My mother-in-law is also a homebody to the point that it inspired me to think about being stuck versus simply loving your home. That’s definitely a theme in Compulsion as well.
  • Do you incorporate yourself into your characters' personalities? If so, which character are you most like?
I honestly don’t think I’m like any of the characters. Except maybe that I do love shoes. : )
  • What do you aim to teach your readers through your books?
I don’t know that I set out to teach readers anything in particular, but I would love it if they discovered that you can pick your family and create your own, and that you can create your own strength. That girls can be strong and brave in real life, and stand up for themselves and take on the world. It happens one tiny decision at a time. I want them to know that they can do anything.
  • If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
I used to say I’d love to read minds, but after having written about a guy who knows what people want, I can see where that would be kind of a horrible gift. So I’m going to go with flying. What could possibly go wrong?
  • Where did you get the inspiration for your characters' names? (Did real people inspire them? Did they come from other characters too? Were they something you picked up from a list of baby names?)
Names are pretty instant for me. The names for every character except Barrie’s father was just “there.” With Barrie’s father, I switched from Cole to Wade. I’m not even quite sure why, but it felt like it was something that needed to be done.
  • Which scene(s) did you enjoy writing the most? (If it's too spoiler-y, you can say the page number)
It’s the scene after Barrie and Eight go to see Cassie perform her outdoor play of Gone with the Wind. Barrie and Eight go to the beach and have their first real kiss, and the night is just perfect. It came after an intense scene, and the joy of writing that scene comes back to me every time I read it.
  • What are 5 things you can't leave the house without?
Sunglasses, phone, iPad, lipstick/gloss, umbrella (otherwise known as my rain-prevention device)
  • Anywhere you still dream of travellng?
I’d love to take a safari in Africa, and I want to go to Australia and the Galapagos. But really, there are tons of places I want to go! My family and I have a game where we get points for different continents, countries, states, National Parks, and Unesco sites. I’d love a full set of continents. : )
  • If you could give one advice to every human on earth, what would it be?
Teach yourself and your kids to love reading. Educational material, nonfiction, fiction. As long as we’re reading, our minds and our hearts are expanding. That’s a beautiful, beautiful thing.
